The 46th All Japan Aikido Demonstration hosted by the Aikikai Foundation was successfully implemented at the Nippon Budokan on May 24, 2008. Despite the bad weather, people involved in Aikido packed the Nippon Budokan by early morning. A record-high 8,000 persons flocked to the venue from dojos across Japan and beyond. Observing the capacity crowd soon after its opening hours, it was the evidence that Aikido has become widespread and gained a broad range of practitioners.

aikido

Aikido was initiated in 1931 by the Founder Morihei Ueshiba at the Ueshiba dojo located at Ushigome, Tokyo (next to the current Aikikai headqarters), the place dubbed ghellish dojo of the Showa erah at that time. Only a very small number of military men, politicians, noblemen, and high-ranking practitioners of Judo and Kendo practiced at the dojo. Aikido owes its current prosperity to Kisshomaru Ueshiba, who played a key role to promote the status of Aikido. It is no exaggeration to say that Aikido has become widely accepted thanks to his strenuous effort.

Aikido has now a network of branches and dojos in 90 countries worldwide and the number of practitioners has reached1.6 million. It has achieved a tremendous growth during the post-war 60 years which tells us that Aikido is substantial enough to meet the universal needs of the modern people. It is a verifiable fact that Aikido has been adopted as the official curriculum at the police and the Self-Defense Forces of Japan. The First Demonstration was presented at the Yamano Hall in 1960 with the participation of only 100 persons. For those involved in a series of events since the beginning, it must be the distant past. At first, it was an in-house controversial issue whether the demonstration would be implemented at the Nippon Budokan. Since the Nippon Budokan has no hierarchy of seats, they were concerned that the event would likely to be the school athletic meeting. It has a point. However, fixing the venue at the Nippon Budokan can be a flexible response to the needs of the age, which means that the Aikido in itself does not change regardless of its style. gAs far as Aikido expands, we must not lose sight of the foundation. That is the raison dfetre of the event,h Moriteru Ueshiba, current doshu, says.

aikido

The demonstrations started with those by the Students Federation. Although Aikido was initiated by the Founder Morihei Ueshiba alone, its population has by now become very large. As different instructors have different appearances, details of technique as well as interpretation vary among them. There are broad ranges of interpretations and emphasis even just for one technique: an instructor with big, wide, dynamic technique; one using simple, strong skill; and another good at smooth, flexible movement. This is a result of what they struggled to respond to what Aikido is like. In this sense, the Aiki Foundation was broad-minded enough to accept their different interpretations as their own individualities. Outstanding performances, among others, are to be highlighted in the following.
