First of all, demonstrations presented by instructors at the headquarters began with Mariko Takamizo, Takanori Kuribayashi, Yoshinobu Irie, and Takeshi Kanazawa. They performed basic techniques of ikkyo, shihounage, and kotegaeshi. All four instructorsf movements were natural and smooth. Especially Kuribayashifs koshinage and iriminage, both subtle and effective, were satisfactory and outstanding. Next, Shigeru Sugahara, Yukimitsu Kobayashi, and Koichi Torikai focused on the basic techniques. Their large, fluid, and accurate movements deserve to be covered in the Aikido textbook.
A spate of performances by Katsuya Nakamura, Branch Manager of Yamaguchi Prefecture, including zagi, hanza handachi accompanied by flexibly acted shikko as well as modest, sharp kokyunage, attracted the audience. Also he sometimes showed the variation of shihounage in which he blocked the opponentfs hands in backward posture. Similarly, Taisuke Kudo, Branch Manager of Tokushima Prefecture, made a large tenkan and gradually diverted into a sharp posture. Finally he brought an opponent down with atemi.

Mitsuo Funakoshi, Branch Manager of Yamagata Prefecture, started his demonstration with a sharp shouting and wielding a bokuto, followed by head-on swing while jumping. Whether he originally acquired the ken technique of this sortd or learned it in the middle of his training remain to be seen. It may be one way how he exemplifies the interpretation of Aikido. His body motions were also modest and speedy in which he demonstrated the blowing technique over shoulder-to-shoulder clash.
Mibukawa, Instructor of Aikikai Ryoubi Branch, known for his trademark white beard, showed the audience a synergy of strong and soft movements like kokyunage and brought the opponent to the floor. He is really a man of full of spirit. In addition, he performed the applied technique of kokyunage in which he threw away three persons holding a jo in an instant movement. His technique using a white folding fan, or oogi, was really excellent. He controls the move against tachi attack foreseeing the opponent movement diverting it to kotegaeshi or shihonage. The white holding fan, preferably used by the Founder Ueshiba, functions as not only tessen (iron fan) often used by warriors but a tool for clarification when teaching the timing of atemi and taking a chance. It is, so to speak, an innermost expression of the Aikido theory and technique. Suizenji Dojo-cho Kazunobu Takamoto showed the demonstration in details and in an easy-to-understand manner. He also displayed kokyunage through intercepting the opponent motion while lifting him followed by throwing.

The demonstration presented by Instructor Yoshinobu Takeda of the AKI Shonan Aikido Renmei was really astonishing to the writer. As soon as he swung his arm, distantly-located five opponents were forced to be position in a scrum. Finally they fell down one another. Swinging down an arm can block the motion of the opponent in attacking position as if exposed to the beam, and eventually it leads him to the floor. One swing of an arm can halt the movements of a group of attackers and let them fall down as if they were bowling pins. His mysterious performance reminds us of those by Instructor Nobuyuki Watanabe. Probably some quality on the part of uke is required for executing such technique. However, such instructions is necessarily subject to various evaluations. As long as people pursue this direction, it never vanishes. Demonstration by Instructor Hideo Takenaka, dojo-cho of Chikuhoukan, has by now become very familiar. First, his big voice shouting gOnegaishimasu.h He exerts much of kokyunage and iriminage in simple and smooth ways and throws an opponent while shouting gdah!h and gYeah!h At last he demonstrated technique of grabbing attack against multiple attackers. Upon completion, he said garigatou.h He always says gTraining should be full of joys\pleased to accept both praising and scolding.h Despite of his old age, he performs dynamic movements without any difficulty to demonstrate his veteran status.

Stunning performance by Masaharu Kawaji, representative of Aikido Wako Branch, attracted the audience. No sooner did he apply iriminage than the opponent lifted in the air and fell down. We could not recognize how he applied this technique, but, it is what really happened. Seeing that he threw overhead the opponent with head-on attacking, the hall was filled with roaring sounds among audience.
